Frozen shoulder

The shoulder slowly becomes painful and stiff over weeks to months. It is most common between 40 and 60, and in people with diabetes or thyroid problems.

Draft: awaiting review by Dr. Swapnil Shah.

Common signs

  • Trouble reaching behind your back or combing your hair
  • Pain that is worse at night, especially lying on that side
  • The arm will not lift fully even when someone helps

See the doctor if

  • Stiffness lasting more than a few weeks
  • You cannot lift the arm above your shoulder

Go to a hospital or call 108 now if:

  • Left shoulder or arm pain with chest pain, breathlessness or sweating can be a heart attack. Call 108 at once

At the clinic

The doctor examines the shoulder and may take an X-ray to rule out other causes. Treatment is regular stretching with a physiotherapist, pain relief and sometimes an injection. Recovery is slow, often several months.
