Back and neck pain

Most back and neck pain comes from strained muscles and joints, often after lifting, long hours at a desk or long commutes. It usually improves within a few weeks with movement and exercise.

Draft: awaiting review by Dr. Swapnil Shah.

Common signs

  • Pain and stiffness after lifting or sitting for long
  • Pain spreading down a leg (sciatica) or an arm
  • Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet

See the doctor if

  • Pain lasting more than 4 to 6 weeks
  • Pain shooting down a leg or arm with numbness
  • Back pain after a fall
  • Pain at night that rest does not ease

Go to a hospital or call 108 now if:

  • Loss of control over urine or stool
  • Numbness between the legs, or sudden weakness in a leg
  • Back pain with fever or unexplained weight loss

At the clinic

The doctor checks your posture, movement and nerves. Most people do not need an X-ray or MRI on the first visit. Treatment is usually exercises, physiotherapy and short-term pain relief.
