Sports injuries and sprains

Twisted ankles, knee ligament tears and pulled muscles are common in cricket, football, badminton and running. Early care decides how quickly you return to play.

Draft: awaiting review by Dr. Swapnil Shah.

Common signs

  • A “pop” at the moment of injury
  • Swelling within a few hours
  • The knee feels unstable or gives way
  • Pain when putting weight on the leg

See the doctor if

  • You cannot walk four steps
  • Swelling has not settled in 2 to 3 days
  • The knee locks, clicks or gives way
  • Pain returns every time you play

Go to a hospital or call 108 now if:

  • The joint looks out of place
  • The foot or hand is numb or cold

At the clinic

For the first two days: rest, ice for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, a crepe bandage and keeping the leg raised. At the clinic the doctor examines the joint and may order an X-ray or MRI. Treatment ranges from a brace and physiotherapy to surgery for some ligament tears, with a plan for returning to sport.
